One of the most important dates of the annual calendar is March 8, because it commemorates International Women´s Day, a day in which the constant struggle of women in society is recognised.

There may come a day when the world does not have to celebrate March the 8th and we all forget that there was a time when International Women's Day took place on that day. But that moment has unfortunately not yet come. We as women, still have to denounce inequality and the gender gap regarding opportunities, just for being a woman.

WHERE DID INTERNATIONAL WOMEN´S DAY COME FROM?

On March 25 1908, one of the most tragic events occurred that exposed the precarious situation of women with respect to their labour rights. A fire took off at the Triangle factory, in New York which caused the death of 140 young women.  

According to the report of the firefighters, a badly extinguished butt lying in a bucket of cloth remains was the source of the  fire. The workers (mainly young women immigrants) could not escape because the managers of the factory had locked all the doors of the exits, a practice carried out to avoid robbery.

 THE 8TH OF MARCH

It wasn´t until after the fire in New York, the US finally began to introduce new health and safety standards. This event was one of the core events that led to an annual day for women to protest for their fundamental rights and shout for gender equality.

Although for women there are several struggles yet to be won, this commemorative date is vitally important to celebrate the achievements that women have made throughout the years and what remains to be achieved and fought for.

THE COLOUR PURPLE

The color purple is the representative color of Women's Day, and the one adopted by women as a sign of the demand.  The socialist women chose this color as a symbol of the feminist struggle.
